Top 10 Teacher Websites For The Classroom

This is the top 10 most used websites that are often found in my classroom. A web2.0 teachers toolkit if you will. Since making Planning Heaven I am constantly finding new exciting and innovative sites but these are my main 10 at the moment. I am going to start blogging and tweeting more top 10 lists of various web technologies and apps.

1)   Google Drive
This is a fantastic website that allows you to store your files online. It is very cheap and free if you only have the basic 5GB plan (more than enough for most). You can easily download files from anywhere to any device and you cans send links of your files to other people. It links very well with google docs so you can collaborate on documents with others. All in all it is a fantastic free service that I have got all my a-level students to sign up to and no-one has yet missed a deadline (fingers crossed!)

2)   Academic Earth
Academic Earth aims to provide everyone with the opportunity to earn a world-class education by offering free online classes and online learning tools. It is essentially a little like youtube only offering free videos of some of the worlds best lectures form some of the best universities. Essentially offering a free quality education to anyone that seeks it.

3)   Poll Everywhere
This website allows you to do class polls with your students using their mobiles phones and texting answers in. The results appear on screen and with most networks have free or unlimited text messages on even their pay as you go plans this could be a valuable classroom tool.

4)   Prezi
Prezi is an online application that allows you to create innovative, interactive multimedia presentations. You can easily create a fantastic, professional looking presentation. I have found that students love to use it and also seem more focused on my presentations if they are in prezi form.

5)   Code Academy
I love this site. It is a great way to introduce programming languages such as JAVA, Python and HTML. No software is needed and there are easy to follow tutorials. I have never come across software like it and its completely free. From an ICT teachers perspective its great! It would also be great for anyone that wants to learn in their own time.

6)   Class Dojo
"ClassDojo improves behavior in class with just one click of a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. It also automatically logs data and creates student behavior reports so you never have to do any data entry." One of my teacher friends is a big advocate of Class Dojo and I must admit, he doesn't really have any behavior issues so the students must respond to it.

7)   Wallwisher
Wallwisher allows you to use your computer like a notice board. You can create multiple 'boards' and anybody you give the URL to can add to the board. As an ICT teacher I use this for plenaries in my lessons and get students to log onto my board and post comments on the lesson. My screen at the front then displays all of the comments that the students have made. I can even save a picture of the finished article and email it to my students for reference. Create notes in your own workspace wall. You can save your workspace at any time and return to them from the same computer or any other computer. You can also share your notes with others by providing the workspace name (or url) to a friend. Great for collaborative ideas and brainstorming as many people can work on the same page at the same time.

8)   Screencast-o-matic
Screencast-o-matic is a website that allows you to create videos by recording whatever is on your screen. You don’t need to download any software and it is a great way for teachers and students to create tutorial videos, research projects or to complete homework.

9)   Kahn Academy
Kahn Academy is one of the most highly rated web technologies that I know of. It is used by a lot of teachers I know and they all can't speak highly enough of it. A great collection of math, science, and finance lectures and quizzes to supplement their classroom materials. Even though I am an ICT teacher I still use the site to introduce some mathematical concepts to my A-level students.

10) Voki
This is a great website where you can have an avatar (computer generated character) speak any text that you input. This is a creative way present information and could be useful to both teachers and students. I use it to create quizzes for my students. So instead of me reading the questions they can have a computer animated Mr T!

Top Screen Capture Software - Daily Classroom Technology (Tool)

Screen-capture software makes common appearances throughout my lessons on both the teacher and student computers. I often use them to record my demonstrations at the front of the class so they can be accessed by the students if they forget anything. With this in mind I thought I would list my current top three:

1) Screencast-o-matic
This has been my most used for the last couple of years. Mainly due to its simplicity and the fact that it is completely web based so I can ask students to use it from home. You don't even need to log in and within seconds of launching the website you can be making your own recording.

2) ScreenCastle

Very similar to Scrrencast-o-matic, Screencastle is a completely free web based screen recording program. You do not need to sign in and you can easily pause your recording and add an optional audio input.

3) Snaggy

Snaggy allows you to edit and annotate a screen capture. It is completely web based and very easy to use. You can add text and drawings to your picture and you can even crop the image. As soon as you are finished your annotated screenshot is ready.

Pinnacle Studio - Daily Classroom App

"Big-screen moviemaking comes to the touchscreen with Pinnacle® Studio for iPad. Our leading film-editing technology brings you an easy-to-use app that enables you to quickly edit video, audio, and photos at the speed of your creativity. " - quote from the website. This is a great free app that allows you to edit video on an ipad or tablet.

Yammer - Daily Classroom Tool

Yammer allows you to create private and secure social networks that can be used in businesses and schools. The free version of yammer would suit the majority of schools and you know it is secure. Would also be good on a small scale for a teacher to set up for a class or form group.

Zite Personalized Magazine - Daily Classroom App

Zite is a free online, innovative and adaptable magazine. It would be great to get students more involved with reading the news and I know a business studies teacher that asks all of his students to use it. The more you read the more adaptable the magazine becomes to your personal tastes. It makes notes of articles you like and will contain more articles of that type the next time you view it.

Vyou - Daily Classroom Tool

This website describes itself as answers to life's questions. You can post questions and people will record answers. You can even post questions to some top professionals from different walks of life. If used properly this could be a valuable and innovative research tool for students or even simply a good discussion topic.

Opportunity For Innovative Teachers

Hi all,

Planning Heaven has received some very positive early feedback and in the not to distant future we will be spending money on advertising to really increase the web traffic. We are going to give the site a little more time to allow the content to grow and the site to develop before we really start to tell everyone about it.

With this in mind we are looking to build a team of key contributors (mainly innovative educators of some kind). We are looking for people to do any number of the following tasks:
  1. Rate and review educational classroom apps
  2. Rate and review educational classroom web tools
  3. Add teaching ideas
  4. Add original teaching resources to the website (free or cost) - potential to earn yourself money while becoming a key contributor.
In return to being part of our team we are going to list you on the homepage (by name or username - your choice). We will also provide links to facebook, email, blogs, twitter etc. This would be good for a CV, development as an innovative teacher and will drive traffic to your different social networking accounts if you so choose.

If you are interested please email me (Dan) at info@planningheaven.com

Podcasting for students with revision and tutorial resources for all subjects. Showing some good results at helping raise achievement but it is not a free service. Definitely worth checking out though.

Collaborate And Earn!

At Planning Heaven we strive to create a free place for teachers to collaborate on innovative technologies and be able to buy, sell and share teaching resources. In our first week, without any advertising we have about 30 teachers contributing to the site. In time special privileges will be created for all those early contributors to the site who have helped it get on the right foot. When the site has been running for a little time and there is a good range of content then we will begin to spend money on advertising. So get in now, there are no listing or membership fees so you have nothing to use.

Evernote - Daily Classroom App

Evernote is a great program that you can get on your computer and your phone. It is essentially a note making program that will automatically sync between all of your formats. I personally use it for detention lists, shopping lists, to-do list etc and whichever format I change it will update to my phone, and computer. I would say this free app is useful for both students and teachers for various reasons. Much more suited to our current students that the classic planner for managing homework. Also if the information is stored on the internet they could never lose it!

Code Academy - Daily Classroom Tool

I know I mentioned Code Academy in a previous post but after having more experience with it in school I thought it was worth a second post. The idea of the website is fantastic and when working it is an amazing learning tool. The students can work at their own pass, it self assesses their work and they can ask for hints and help whenever they need it. We had an issue with the website not working when too many students were accessing it at the same time, although I think this was a network issue within our school as opposed to a problem with the site. It is definitively worth checking out but maybe do a small trial run before you go into a full blown lesson. I would say this is suitable for KS3, 4 & 5 due to the varying difficulties of tutorials available.

Star Walk - Daily Classroom App

This is a great app that allows you to point your device at the sky and it will identify what constellations you are looking at in real time. It uses mapping software and the camera on your phone to identify constellations in the night sky. Really cool, useful, innovative and educational app. £2.99

Geocaching - Daily Classroom Tool

Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online. I have seen this used in an outstanding Geography department and it had huge success attracting all parents and students and was even mention in the local media.

Sell your original teaching resources to earn some extra income

www.planningheaven.com is a brand new website that has been live for a little over a week. It allows teachers to create accounts with no signup or listing fees and sell their original teaching resources. It requires all members to upload a single free resource to enable them to sell resources. This is mainly to ensure teachers can come to the site and find free resources as well. Planning heaven also allows teachers to share ideas, rate, review and add teaching technologies and mobile apps that can be used in the classroom.

With time and collaboration it could become a hub of planning activity for all teachers. It is 100% free to use and planning heaven only takes a small percentage of any sales that are made on resources. The small percentage we take is simply to help with the running of the site and to ensure we can continue to build and add improvements. It has not been designed to make a profit and we will ensure that the vast majority of all money made goes to the teachers who have added the resources.
